The Symptoms of Leukemia in Children

The Symptoms of Leukemia in Children

Some of the most common types of leukemia in children are said to be acute lymphoblastic leukemia or acute myelogenous leukemia. The symptoms of the different types of leukemia that appear in children are:

Malfunctioning immune system

Children suffering from different types of leukemia get infected with other diseases easily. This is because the WBCs in the body start reproducing at a rapid pace but they do not have the right protective properties. This means the ratio between healthy and unhealthy cells is not equal. As a result, children catch more infections with the lack of healthy WBCs to stop them.

Bruising
With the count of platelets in the blood being dangerously low, children with leukemia get a lot of bruises all over the body. Sometimes, without a cause.

Anemia
One of the symptoms of the different types of leukemia in children is anemia. This occurs when the oxygen-carrying red blood cells are not produced in sufficient amounts. The lack of oxygen in the body causes the child to feel breathless and tire easily. Due to the lack of an appropriate amount of healthy blood cells, the child may experience headaches and feel light-hearted. Other symptoms include pallor of the skin and feeling unusually cold.

Breathing difficulties
Sometimes, leukemia affects organs to expand, like the lymph nodes or glands near the lungs named thymus, which presses up against the trachea. Children then face difficulty in breathing.

Joint pain
One of the symptoms of leukemia is discomfort or pain in the joints. The reason for this is the accumulation of leukemia cells in between joints or on the bones.

Weight loss
Leukemia causes the production of an unnecessary amount of white blood cells in the body. This causes some of the organs to swell up. When this happens, these organs expand in size and try to take up more space, squishing the stomach. Once this happens, the child feels full and loses appetite, which subsequently leads to weight loss.

Inflammation
Another of the symptoms of different types of leukemia that appear in young kids is swelling of the face and arms. This occurs due to the SVCS, which creates a blockage of blood in the vein that connects the brain and heart. This causes swelling in certain parts of the body, like the chest, face, arm, or neck.

Tiredness
Sometimes, the blood circulation slows down because of the thickening of the blood. This causes the child to feel tired constantly.

Headaches
If the child is suffering from a type of leukemia that affects the nervous system, symptoms like headaches, seizures, balance issues, and focus issues are noticed.

Rashes on skin
Skin rashes are one of the symptoms of the different types of leukemia. This happens when excess white blood cells appear near the skin and form dark patches or rashes. Furthermore, tiny spots appear on the skin due to bruising which are sometimes mistaken as skin rashes.
